About our hickories

Hickories were first cultivated in 2005, first from seeds and later from Canadian grafted plants, which were used as graft donors. The main time for grafting is winter and spring; this work is done indoors. 

Another pleasant surprise presented by the hickories is the plant’s tolerance for soaking in spring and high groundwater.It can be stated that none of the hickories have ever been frostbitten. 

Hickories originate in North America. These are the varieties of hickory and resistance to cold temperatures: 

  • Pecan(lat. Carya illinoiensis) -32-35℃
  • Shagbark hickory (lat. Carya ovata) -35℃
  • Shellbark hickory (lot. Carya laciniosa) -32℃
  • Bitternut hickory (lot. Carya cordiformis) -38℃

And their hybrids: 

  • Hicans – hybrids of pecans and shagbark or shellbark hickory  -35℃
  • Bitcans – hybrids of pecans and bitternut hickories -37℃

Most of these species and hybrids were bred in North America, so they came to Lithuania from there. The selection of varieties focused on resistance to frost and the shortest vegetation time required for the fruit to ripen.

Our hickory collection

Pecans (lat. Carya illinoiensis)

Pecans are divided into northern and southern groups. Northern pecans are further divided into ultra-northern ones. We grow almost all varieties of ultra-northern pecans in Lithuania, some of them yield harvests. These are CORNFIELD, WARREN 346, JAMES EARLY, MARTZAHN, SNAPS EARLY, CARLSON 3, DEERSTAND, CAMPBELL NC4, LUCAS, MULLAHY, STARKING HARDY GIANT, DUMBELL LAKE BEST. , MULLAHY, STARKING HARDY GIANT, DUMBELL LAKE BEST)

We also grow the most resistant southern pecan varieties MANDAN, GIBSON, CANTON, FISHER, IOWA, SHEPHERD. 

Hicans ( pecan and shagbark hickory hybrids) (lat. Carya illinoiensis x Carya ovata)

We have pecan and Shagbark hickory hybrids: BURTON, JAMES, GERALDI`S, T-92, McALISTER. 

Shagbark hickories (lat. Carya ovata)

We can offer shagbark hickory varieties: GRAINGER, PORTER, WESCHKE, NEILSON. 

Shellbark hickories (lat. Carya laciniosa)

We grow Shellbark hickory varieties: KEYSTONE, SIMPSON 1, FAYETTE, DOGHOUSE, T-17.

Bitcans (hybrids of pecans and bitternut hickories) (lat. Carya illinoiensis x Carya cordiformis)

We can offer the most resistant hybrid of pecan and bitternut hickory ABBOT 

Order information

All hickory varieties are grafted into the root stock of the ultra-northern pecan.. 

The base price for grafted one year old hickories is 40 euros.
